The Importance of pH and Water Quality in Cannabis Cultivation

You can feed the perfect nutrient recipe and still see deficiencies if pH or water quality is off. These two factors control nutrient availability more than most growers realise.

Nutrients only become available to the plant within specific pH ranges. Outside those ranges, even abundant fertiliser sits locked in the medium. Water quality (dissolved solids, chlorine, chloramine, and hardness) further influences how the plant absorbs what you provide.

Getting these fundamentals right solves a surprising number of “mystery” deficiency symptoms.

Ideal pH ranges

  • Soil — roughly 6.0–7.0 (many aim for 6.2–6.8)
  • Coco and soilless — roughly 5.5–6.5
  • Hydroponics — roughly 5.5–6.2

These are guidelines. Slight variation is normal; large or persistent swings are not.

Why pH matters so much

Each nutrient has an availability curve across the pH scale. When pH drifts too high or too low, specific elements become unavailable even though they are present in the medium. The plant then shows deficiency symptoms that look like underfeeding, when the real problem is chemistry.

Measuring and adjusting

Use a reliable digital pH meter and calibrate it regularly. Measure the pH of the nutrient solution before feeding and, in drainage systems, check runoff pH periodically. Adjust with pH-up or pH-down products designed for horticulture. Make small changes and re-test.

Water quality basics

Tap water varies enormously. High chlorine or chloramine can harm beneficial microbes and young roots. High dissolved solids (hard water) already contribute calcium and magnesium, which must be accounted for in the feeding programme. Reverse-osmosis water gives a clean starting point but requires full mineral supplementation.

Simple steps: let chlorine off-gas if possible, or use a carbon filter; test your source water EC/TDS so you know its baseline contribution.

Common warning signs

  • Interveinal chlorosis that does not respond to added nutrients
  • Tip burn despite moderate feeding
  • Sudden lockouts after a pH swing
  • Inconsistent growth between plants receiving the same feed

Practical routine

Test source water once. Adjust every nutrient solution to the target pH range for your medium. Recheck meters weekly. Keep records for a few cycles so patterns become visible.

Final thought

pH and water quality are invisible until they go wrong. Make them visible with simple testing and you remove an entire category of frustration from growing. Stable chemistry lets the plant express its genetics instead of fighting the medium.
