Harvesting Cannabis: Signs Your Plants Are Ready and Best Timing Tips

Harvest too early and you leave potency and weight on the table. Harvest too late and the effect profile can shift toward heavier sedation while some terpenes fade. The goal is to catch the window that matches the experience you want.

Trichome observation — the most reliable guide

Trichomes are the tiny resin glands that contain the majority of cannabinoids and terpenes. A jeweller’s loupe or USB microscope is essential.

• Clear trichomes — still immature; lower potency
• Cloudy / milky trichomes — peak THC window for many cultivars; often described as balanced or uplifting
• Amber trichomes — THC beginning to degrade into CBN; effect often feels heavier and more sedating

Most growers aim for mostly cloudy with 10–30 % amber, adjusting according to preference.

Pistil colour

White pistils gradually darken and curl inward. When the majority have changed colour, the plant is usually well into the harvest window. Pistil colour is a supporting signal, not the primary one — trichomes remain more accurate.

Overall plant cues

Fan leaves may begin to yellow as the plant remobilises nutrients. Buds swell and the plant’s stretch slows. A strong, mature aroma develops. These are useful background indicators.

Timing within the day

Many growers harvest in the morning after the dark period, when terpene content is often higher and the plant has not yet begun its daily metabolic cycle. Consistency matters more than the exact hour.

Staggered harvest

On larger plants the top colas often finish before the lower branches. Some growers take the tops first and give the lowers extra days under the lights. This can improve overall quality and yield.

Preparation before cutting

Have clean scissors, hanging space or drying racks, and a controlled environment ready. Decide whether you will whole-plant hang or branch hang. Reduce humidity and temperature in the drying space in advance.

Final note

Take photographs of trichomes at different stages across a few harvests. Your own visual library becomes more useful than any generic chart. Harvest is the last creative decision of the grow — make it deliberate.
