Almost every experienced grower can list the mistakes they made on their first run. The good news is that the list is short and highly predictable. Avoiding these common errors dramatically improves the odds of a successful first harvest.

Overwatering

The number-one killer of seedlings and young plants. Roots need oxygen as well as moisture. Constantly soggy medium leads to root rot and damping-off. Water thoroughly, then wait until the medium has dried to an appropriate depth before watering again. Lift the pot — weight is a better guide than surface appearance.

Overfeeding

More nutrients do not equal faster growth. Excess mineral salts burn roots and lock out other elements. Start at half or even quarter strength of the manufacturer’s recommendation and only increase when the plant shows it can handle more. “Less is more” is almost always true for beginners.
