Extraction is the bridge between raw plant material and concentrated products. Different methods prioritise different outcomes — terpene preservation, purity, yield, or simplicity. Understanding the basics helps you read labels and lab reports more intelligently.

Solvent-based extraction

Hydrocarbons (butane, propane) and ethanol are widely used. They efficiently dissolve cannabinoids and terpenes. The critical quality step is the purge — removing residual solvent to safe levels. Properly purged products test below strict residual limits. Poorly purged products are a safety and flavour problem.

CO₂ extraction

Supercritical or subcritical carbon dioxide can be tuned to extract different fractions. It is often praised for cleanliness. The resulting oil may still require further refinement depending on the intended product.

Solventless methods

Ice-water hash, dry sift, and heat-and-pressure rosin rely on physical separation rather than chemical solvents. Many connoisseurs prefer these for flavour purity and the absence of residual solvent concerns. Yield is typically lower and starting-material quality is even more critical.

Distillation and refinement

Further processing can produce highly purified distillates. These are excellent for consistent dosing and formulation but often require reintroduction of terpenes if aroma is desired.
